THE HAGUE, Netherlands, March 15 (UPI) -- Serbian politician Vojislav Seselj says the tribunal in his war crimes trial in the Netherlands is a "political instrument" of the U.N. Security Council.
Seselj's comments came in his closing argument before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, B92 reported.
He accused the court of "performing a dirty task" by acting in the interest of Western intelligence services.
"The court is not legal and regular because it was formed by an incompetent body -- the U.N. Security Council. It was not formed to bring justice but to be the U.N. Security Council's tool that establishes and preserves peace," he said.
"We cannot talk about justice here. This court is a political instrument, even a military instrument. ... This court substitutes the U.S. Cavalry or the U.S. Sixth Fleet."
Seselj, the leader of the opposition Serb Radical Party, is accused of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity from 1991 to 1994 against non-Serb populations in Bosnia, Croatia and northern Serbia.
He said the indictment against him was designed to remove him from Serbian politics and to destroy his party.
"People will most likely laugh at your verdict," he told judges. "There is no evidence against me."
