75 charged in Port Said riots

CAIRO, March 15 (UPI) -- Egypt says 75 people are charged in last month's deadly soccer riots at Port Said.

Prosecutors said the suspects include nine police officers, three Masry club officials and one electrical engineer. They have all been referred to criminal court for alleged involvement in the violence that took place after the soccer match between Masry and Ahly, the Egypt Independent reported.

Meanwhile, thousands of fans and activists staged a massive march in Cairo Thursday, protesting the delay in government action in response to the riots. The march is in accordance with Islamic tradition, which calls for commemoration of the dead after 40 days, Ahram Online reported.

The Port Said riots killed 70 and injured hundreds in what was the country's worst soccer disaster. Thousands of Masry fans descended onto the pitch at the end of the game and attacked Ahly fans.
