Al-Qaida threatens U.S. school in Yemen

SANAA, Yemen, March 7 (UPI) -- An American school in Yemen says it has become a target of that country's al-Qaida militants.

The American Language Institute AMIDEAST, located in the southern city of Aden, received an anonymous phone call threatening an attack by the terrorist organization unless it complied with the group's demands, Bikyamasr.com reported Wednesday.

The demands were not made public.

Officials said the institute has received similar warnings over the years and that nothing has happened but students and teachers are reported to be worried.

In a related development, suspected al-Qaida militants attacked a patrol vehicle in the southern Yemen province of Shabwa, killing at least one soldier and wounding four others, two of them critically.

Suicide bombings and attacks against the army have increased in Yemen the past two weeks.
