Australian army angry over dirty Facebook page

SYDNEY, March 1 (UPI) -- Australian army officials say they plan to discipline soldiers for posting comments on a private Facebook page filled with sexist and racist statements.

Lt. Gen. David Morrison said he will personally call the soldiers on the carpet, The Sydney Morning Herald reported Thursday.

''I am certainly going to try and find (the) people who are doing this and spend some time with them to tell them -- and show them -- why they are wrong,'' he said.

The Facebook page RAR Buddies was brought to the attention of military officials last year, the newspaper said. The page, which can only be accessed by members of the Facebook group, contains posts that use derogatory terms for Muslims and women.

The posts accessed by the Australian Broadcasting Corp. include pornographic images, the newspaper said.

Morrison said the soldiers left themselves open to discipline by calling the page "RAR."

"That, for us, stands for Royal Australian Regiment," he said. "'The question has to be asked, 'Those views under that title? Is that appropriate?' The Royal Australian Regiment of which I've been a proud member since 1979, stands for nothing like that."
