OXFORD, England, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Richard Dawkins, the British scientist who has become one of the world's best-known atheists, says he is not absolutely certain there is no God.
In a public discussion Thursday with Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, Dawkins said he would rate his non-belief at 6.9 on a scale of 7, The Daily Telegraph reported. Dawkins said he prefers to think of himself as an "agnostic."
"I think the probability of a supernatural creator existing is very very low," he said.
The discussion in Oxford University's Sheldonian Theater was friendly, with Williams at one point joking about his own beard. The archbishop said he would try to answer the question whether an old-fashioned straight-edge razor is more complex than an electric one, adding "Not that I know about razors."
Williams said he believes human beings evolved from animals but are nonetheless "in the image of God." He described the authors of the Book of Genesis as inspired but not "to do 21st century physics."
When Dawkins said he thinks Pope Benedict XVI is more of a biblical literalist than Williams, the archbishop said, "I will ask him some time."
