DAKAR, Senegal, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- The opposition in Senegal called for protests Monday, a day after police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters who hurled stones in Dakar.
A young man was killed Sunday in clashes between police and protesters demonstrating against President Abdoulaye Wade being able to run for a third term, Radio France Internationale reported. The man was not a protester but was going to the bakery to buy bread, said imam Abdoul Aziz Ndoye, who was his tutor.
Two people have been killed in a week of clashes, bringing the total to six in the protests, RFI reported.
The 23 June Movement, known as M23, called for the Monday demonstration at 3 p.m. In the capital's Independence Square.
Senegal's Constitutional Council has ruled Wade, 85, could seek a third term, despite the two-term limit mandated in the Constitution.
M23, a coalition that includes 10 opposition candidates, opposes Wade's re-election. The coalition says Wade violated the Constitution that he had amended to limit presidents to two terms and has called for "popular resistance."
The election is scheduled for Sunday.
