CAIRO, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Egyptian officials have yet to confirm an official date for the country's first presidential election since former President Hosni Mubarak was ousted.

Administration officials have said the delay is due to problems organizing the expatriate vote. A briefing by the election commission projected a vote sometime by the end of May, the BBC reported.

Commission Chairman Faruq Sultan said in an interview on Nile News channel that nominations had to be filed by March 10, and by that time an election timetable would be finalized.

Hosni Mubarak stepped down on Feb. 11, 2011, after which the Supreme Council of Armed Forces assumed power. Parliament has already been elected and its first session took place earlier this month. The BBC suggests there is a behind-the-scenes struggle over how soon to return to civilian rule.
