Senior U.S. officer dies in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- An investigation was under way Sunday in Afghanistan into the non-combat death of a 49-year-old U.S. brigadier general in Kabul, Army officials said.

Brig. Gen. Terence Hildner died Friday, Fort Hood (Texas) commander Lt. Gen. Don Campbell Jr. said in a statement.

The base Web site didn't disclose any details about Hildner's death, but said it was under investigation.

His career included commands in Kuwait and Iraq during Operation Desert Storm, as well as conducting the last U.S. patrol along the East-West German border before Germany's reunification in October 1990, as well as the invasion of Iraq, the report said.

In Afghanistan, Hildner had been working in support of the NATO training mission for Afghan soldiers and police since December.

There was no mention of surviving family members.
