EU sets conditions for Serbia candidacy

BRUSSELS, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- The European Union says Serbia could become a candidate for EU membership by the end of February if it meets conditions, including continuing talks with Kosovo.

Stefan Fule, the EU's enlargement commissioner, said another key condition to candidacy is agreement on regional representation of Kosovo, the Serbian news agency Tanjug reported.

Fule spelled out conditions after meeting with Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic in Brussels Tuesday.

"I acknowledged the commitment of the Serbian leadership to European integration," Fule said in a statement. "I stressed the EU still expects an active approach to the continuation of the dialogue with Pristina and tangible progress, especially on the issue of regional representation."

If Serbia meets conditions in time, the European Council will confirm the decision to grant it candidate status at its next session, Fule said.

During a two-day visit to Brussels, Jeremic met with EU foreign ministers, including those representing Germany, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania.
