Palestinian gov't changes planned

GAZA CITY, Gaza, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- The Palestine Liberation Organization and Palestinian Authority have agreed to make changes to make government more representative, officials said.

Senior Hamas official Khalid al-Batsh told the Ma'an News Agency a PLO reform committee met in Amman on Sunday and came to the agreement.

The PLO was established in 1964 to represent all Palestinians. The PA is the governing body of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

The changes concern how members are elected to the governing bodies of the organizations.

Monday marks nearly eight months since the May 2011 reconciliation between Palestinian factions after four years of derision and bitter political rivalry between governments, Ma'an reported.

Al-Batsh said he is still pressing for the release of political prisoners.
