CAIRO, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces announced Monday candidates can begin registering for the country's presidential elections in mid-April.
Maj. Gen. Moshen al-Fangari told state television the elections would be held mid-June, but did not give an exact date.
Bikyamasr.com reported the elections would be seen as the final transitional step since Hosni Mubarak was ousted as president last February after three decades in office.
While Mohamed ElBaradei has withdrawn from the field, several other politicians have made clear their intention to run, including former Muslim Brotherhood top official Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, who is largely seen as the front-runner.
Other hopefuls include Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa, Salafist Hazem Abu Ismail and former popular talk show host and the country's first female candidate for president, Bothaina Kamel.
