EU to support Palestinians, report says

BRUSSELS, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- The European Union must show more support of the West Bank's Palestinian population, an internal report concluded Thursday.

Concerned about alleged Israeli attempts of "forced transfer" of the 150,000 Palestinians from "Area C" of the West Bank, which is under full Israeli civilian and security control, the report of the EU's European Heads of Mission in Jerusalem and Ramallah cautioned that chances for a two-state settlement on the agreed-upon 1967 borders could be lost if Israel does not modify its policies in Area C, Haaretz reported.

The newly approved report also directed criticism at the Palestinian Authority, which it said has failed to devote enough attention to Area C.

An unnamed European diplomat pointed out "the European governments hold a variety of stances regarding the situation, but everyone agreed on these documents."

The territory under examination includes 62 percent of the West Bank's area, 5.8 percent of its Palestinian population and most of the Jericho Valley.
