Chinese dissident arrested

BEIJING, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- A Chinese human rights activists called reporters from a police station Thursday morning to say he was there for questioning and was to be arrested.

Hu Jia said he was ordered to report for interrogation hours after police raided his house Wednesday night and seized two computers, The Daily Telegraph reported. He said he packed a bag and called friends to get his 4-year-old daughter because his wife was away.

In his telephone call, Hu said he could not give details about why he was at the police station. He was released last year after serving a prison term imposed in 2008.

Recently, Hu has commented on Twitter on the conditions under which another activist is being held. Twitter is banned in China and authorities try to block it, although people in the country can use virtual private networks to get around the notorious Great Firewall of China.

In his telephone call, Hu seemed most concerned about his daughter, the newspaper reported. He said the last time he was arrested she was too young to realize what was going on.

"But now she's 4, she understands a little more, and I'm worried adult squabbles can affect an innocent child, so I made my daughter go to her room to read books and play with her Barbie dolls," he said, describing the raid Wednesday night.
