FRANKFURT, Germany, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- German prosecutors Monday sought a life sentence for Arid Uka, who opened fire on a bus full of American soldiers last year at Frankfurt Airport.
Uka, 21, a Kosovo Albanian, confessed in August to laying in wait for the attack. He killed two U.S. airmen and wounded two others. The bus was bound for Ramstein Air Base en route to deployment in Afghanistan.
Uka claimed he planned the March 2 shooting to save Afghan women from being raped by American soldiers. Michaela Roth, Uka's defense attorney, said his client was driven to the shootings after watching a clip of the movie "Redacted," which depicts an Iraqi woman being raped by U.S. soldiers.
Roth told the court Monday that for Uka, who was sexually molested at the age of 6, the fictional account was triggering. "It brought feelings back -- feelings of shame, helplessness and despair," she said.
Germany does not impose life sentences without the possibility of parole, typically after a minimum of 15 years, except in cases of "severe guilt." Prosecutors are seeking to make Uka ineligible for parole.
The judges are to pronounce sentence Jan. 19.
