Australia pol says immigrants need hygiene

SYDNEY, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Australian politician Teresa Gambaro said Monday she thinks immigrants need to be instructed on proper hygiene.

Along with teaching immigrants to use deodorant, Gambaro, a Liberal National Party member of Parliament who is the shadow secretary for citizenship and settlement, said the mandatory cultural training should include educating them not to push when waiting in line.

The 53-year-old lawmaker told The Australian her position was born out of concern that Australia's foreign-born population is assimilating as well as it should.

"Without trying to be offensive, we are talking about hygiene and what is an acceptable norm in this country when you are working closely with other coworkers," she said.

Gambaro called for mandatory "cultural awareness training" in the workplace for immigrants under such programs as 457 visas, temporary visas that allow immigrants to work in Australia for up to four years. An estimated 90,120 of these visas were granted in the last fiscal year.

"It's not just about having bodies in the workplace. If they are going to have a good experience working for us here in Australia they need to have cultural awareness and socially skilled workers as well as being work-skilled workers," Gambaro told The Australian.
