PRAGUE, Czech Republic, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- The Czech Health Ministry is recommending Czech women who received French-made breast implants at the center of a global health concern have them removed.
Nearly 2,000 Czech women are thought to have received the potentially faulty breast implants supplied by the now-defunct Poly Implant Prothese company, Radio France Internationale reported Friday.
On Thursday, PIP founder Jean-Claude Mas said much of the information emerging in the scandal is false, but he acknowledged he knew the silicone used by his firm was "not approved."
Mas reportedly told authorities in October he knew it was not approved but changed the composition knowingly because PIP gel was cheaper and "as far as the price-performance ratio is concerned it was cheaper and of better quality."
"I always knew" the product was non-standard, he said.
PIP was closed down and its products banned in 2010 after it was found using a silicone gel that allegedly caused abnormally high rupture rates, RFI reported.
