MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- The Islamist militant group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a series of explosions Wednesday night in northeast Nigeria, officials said.

A Boko Haram spokesman told journalists the attacks were came as the group's deadline for Christians and southern Nigerians to leave the region expired.

"This is to confirm that we always match our words with actions," the spokesman was quoted as saying by AllAfrica.com.

No injuries were reported in the blasts in Maiduguri and Damaturu but two people died in Damaturu at the hands of gunmen, AllAfrica.com said.

A spokesman for the Joint Task Force of the Nigerian military said the blasts targeted civilians, Nigeria's Daily Trust reported.
