25 dead, 100 missing in Philippines slide

MANILA, Philippines, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- A landslide that destroyed dozens of shanties at a gold mining village in the Philippines early Thursday killed at least 25 people, authorities said.

Police and other officials told the Philippine Star at least 15 people had been pulled from the debris alive but more than 100 people were missing.

Efforts to reach the mining site -- at Panganason in the Compostela Valley -- to find any survivors of the predawn landslide were made difficult by the rugged terrain, said Davao Region police Chief Jaime Morente.

Heavy rains in the Mindanao region may have triggered the 3 a.m. collapse, the Star said, and the region was bracing for more flooding.

Rescuers had found 25 bodies at the village, Morente said.

Benito Ramos, executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council, said rescuers reported more than 100 others remained missing.

"Our rescuers recover 15 person[s] alive," he said.

A slide in the area claimed at least 20 lives in April 2010.
