Stormy weather causes UK blackouts, damage

LONDON, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Severe storms with wind gusts up to 100 mph caused significant damage in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland Tuesday, including one death, authorities say.

Throughout the UK, trees fell onto railroad tracks and power lines, while heavy rains triggered flood warnings in several areas. Thousands of people in parts of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland were without power.

In England, a 50-year-old man was killed when a tree collapsed on his van in Kent. A tree fell on a bus in Surrey causing serious injuries to the driver.

The BBC said transport in various parts of Scotland and London was adversely affected, with several closures and limited service. Commuters were urged to stay home and ScotRail advised passengers not to travel.

Edinburgh Airport was not accepting incoming flights and Glasgow Airport anticipated cancellations due to high winds.
