Seven dead in Kenyan boat tragedy

LAMU, Kenya, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- At least seven people died and several more were reported missing after a boat capsized off the coast of Kenya's Lamu Island, officials said.

The boat collided with a Kenya Electricity Generating Co. boat Sunday evening, The Standard, Nairobi, Kenya, reported.

The boat was ferrying passengers from Lamu Island to another island when the accident occurred.

"We are told there were 82 passengers aboard the ill-fated boat, 25 people have been rescued, while 23 people swam to safety. The search for others is ongoing," said Coast Province police officer Agrey Adoli.

Adoli said the boat was overloaded at the time of the accident.

Police said the KenGen boat made it to safety.

The Kenyan Red Cross and the Kenya navy teams were conducting the search-and-rescue operations.
