CHAH BAHAR, Iran, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- The Iranian navy successfully test-fired its domestically produced "Mehrab" surface-to-air missile in the Persian Gulf, Adm. Habibollah Sayari said Sunday.

The missile was tried out during Iran's Velayat 90 war games in the eastern part of Hormuz Strait, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported. Other types of surface-to-surface missiles also have been tested during the training exercises, he said.

Sayari, the commander of Iran's navy, said the naval exercises have a dual purpose -- to show Iran will do its best to maintain security and peace in the region and to send a clear message to outsiders that they have no role in there, IRNA said.

The Velayat 90 maneuvers began Saturday in the Persian Gulf waters and Sea of Oman.
