MOSCOW, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Russia said Tuesday flight tests of its Bulava submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile are complete and it will begin service with the navy.

"We have made a very important step -- we have completed the cycle of flight tests … of the Bulava missile," President Dmitry Medvedev said. "Now it will be put into service."

Two of the missiles were launched Friday from the Borey-class nuclear-powered submarine Yury Dolgoruky in the White Sea and hit designated targets at the Kura test range on Kamchatka, some 3,700 miles to the east, RIA Novosti reported.

The Bulava, under development since 1998, carries up to 10 warheads and has a range of more than 5,000 miles.
