South Korean funeral snub brings harsh words from the North

SEOUL, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- The North Korean government Sunday said South Korea's response to leader Kim Jong-Il's death was unacceptable, the Yonhap news agency reported.

State media in Pyongyang issued a statement saying its southern neighbor was showing disrespect for the 69-year-old Kim, who died Dec. 17.

The communist dictator's state funeral is scheduled for Wednesday, but South Korea isn't sending an official delegation, the Yonhap news agency said.

That rankled North Korean officials.

"Their obstructions will entail unpredictable catastrophic consequences to the North-South relations," the news report said. "The nation will finally test the morality of the South Korean authorities as well as sincerity of their call for improvement of the North-South relations."

The South Korean government issued a statement after Kim's death expressing sympathy for North Koreans, but avoided any condolences for the leader or his family.

Meanwhile, Yonhap said North Korean state-run media had broken its silence on naming United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, a former South Korean minister.

Ban issued a U.N. release of condolences for Kim, which was widely broadcast and published, the report said.
