KABUL, Afghanistan, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- Some 50 people were killed in Afghanistan Sunday in a suicide funeral bombing and in anti-insurgency operations, officials said.
The funeral bombing happened in Taloqan, the capital of the northern province of Takhar, where at least 20 people were killed and another 30 injured, the BBC reported.
It wasn't reported whose funeral it was, but there were a number of regional political figures in attendance and among the dead and injured, the report said.
The region is undergoing a transfer of security from NATO forces to Afghanistan's police and armed forces.
In Kabul, the Interior Ministry announced a 24-hour counter-terror mission that concluded Sunday in nine provinces was considered a success, China's state news agency Xinhua reported.
"As a result of these operations, 30 armed insurgents were killed and seven others were arrested," the ministry said in a release.
The report said 10 roadside bombs had been seized and defused and "a handful" of weapons were seized, Xinhua said.
