Iran begins naval war games

TEHRAN, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- The Iranian navy began 10 days of military exercises Saturday in the Sea of Oman and the Indian Ocean, officials said.

Rear Adm. Habibollah Sayyari said the goal of the war games is to demonstrate friendship to other countries in the region, the semiofficial Fars News Agency reported.

The exercises give Iran a chance to demonstrate its strength in international waters and to test its latest equipment, he added.

A wide range of vessel types are to be involved in the exercises. They will take place in an area between the Strait of Hormuz, the entrance to the Persian Gulf, and the Gulf of Aden.
