Police had been tipped off the three northern Nigeria homes they raided were residences of Boko Haram members.

The gunfight in which the officers and sect members were killed came during a raid at Darmanawa Quarters, Ungwan Uku in Kano.

Kano State Police Commissioner Ibrahim Idris said police found a vehicle loaded with explosives for an attack.

He said police also recovered two other vehicles, weapons and ammunition.

Boko Haram said in a statement Saturday it planned attacks in Kano, prompting police to issue a terrorism alert.

The Daily Trust reported Idris said police also discovered bombs and bomb-making materials, including ammonia nitrate and empty gas cylinders.

Also Saturday, a police officer was critically wounded in an evening attack after officers acting on a tip raided a suspected Boko Haram hideout in Ungwan-Uku, Kano.
