Yi said the negotiations have noting to do with the upcoming elections on Taiwan.

He said consensus reached in 1992 serves as a significant basis for negotiations between Taiwan and the mainland.

The mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait and Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation held talks in Singapore in 1992 that led to the creation of an accord.
