Family gets jail for honor killing

MONS, Belgium, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- A court in Belgium has handed lengthy prison sentences to the parents of a 20-year-old girl who was the victim of an honor killing, the family's lawyer said.

Sadia Sheik, 20, was shot dead by her brother four years ago after refusing to marry a relative from the family's native Pakistan, Flanders News reported Tuesday.

The public prosecutor said Sadia wanted to marry her Belgian boyfriend instead of the man her family had selected.

Sadia's father was sentenced to 25 years in prison while her mother drew a 20-year sentence.

The brother who used his parents' gun to shoot her was sentenced to 15 years in jail and a sister received a five-year sentence.

The family's lawyer said the sentences are unprecedented and the judge apparently wanted to set an example.

The lawyer said he is considering an appeal.
