New Israeli ambassador arrives in Egypt

CAIRO, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Yaakov Amitai, who arrived in Cairo Monday as Israel's new ambassador to Egypt, called for peaceful relations between the two countries.

Amita said his job is to reinforce peace. He said he's happy to be in Cairo at this historic time, the Egyptian newspaper al-Masry al-Youm reported.

"The Egyptian revolution will succeed, God winning," Amati said.

Amati replaces Yitzhak Levanon, who left Cairo in September after dozens of protesters attacked the Israeli Embassy.

Amitai worked at the Israeli Embassy in Cairo in the mid-1980s and has spent the past three years at the Israeli Embassy in Ethiopia.
