MP apologizes for attending Nazi party

LONDON, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A member of Britain's Parliament apologized for attending a party where a friend dressed in an SS uniform and some party-goers uttered Nazi slogans.

Conservative lawmaker Aidan Burley said in a post on the social networking site Twitter he was "extremely sorry for any offense that was caused" at the party this month in the French Alps and that he did "deeply regret inappropriate behavior by some guests," The Guardian reported.

Burley, 32, posted the apology at 12:30 p.m. Sunday to his 385 followers on Twitter but it was passed on to numerous others, and many called for his removal from office.

The Daily Mail reported some of the dozen friends Burley was with at a restaurant in the ski resort of Val Thorens at Savoie chanted, "Hitler, Hitler, Hitler," The Guardian said.

The Mail said Burley, elected in 2010, raised a glass in a toast before another guest, caught on film, made a speech in which he said: "Let's raise a toast to Tom for organizing the stag do, and if we're perfectly honest, to the ideology and thought process of the Third Reich."

The party was reported to have moved to a British-themed pub where people spoke in thick German accents and uttered chants including, "Mein Fuhrer!"

A French police spokesman said Burley's friends could be prosecuted.

"Anti-Semitic and pro-Nazi crimes are taken extremely seriously in France," the Mail reported the spokesman said. "Anyone suspected of breaking the law in this respect can and will be prosecuted."

Burley, a senior aide to Transport Secretary Justine Greening, is thought to be a close friend of Mark Fournier, 34, for whom the party was held.
