Cafe owner charged in mass food poisoning

DALARNA, Sweden, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A cafe owner in Sweden faces criminal charges after 86 people suffered food poisoning following an order to close, officials said.

Officials said nearly a dozen customers reported the cafe owner in Dalarna, hoping to be compensated for the tainted meals, The Local reported.

Health inspectors recently warned the owner, 27, about unsafe conditions and banned her from handling food on the premises until she made changes, officials said. Despite the warning, the woman ran the cafe for three more days without taking any corrective measures.

"I was one of those who fell ill. I make no claims for myself, but I know others who had to be off work due to the illness," Lars Enoksson, a business administrator for Dalarna, told the Dala-Demokraten newspaper.

The local prosecutor's offices said the woman's decision to keep the cafe open after being warned violated Swedish food laws.

The woman, unidentified by The Local, denied all allegations and has since closed the cafe.
