SEOUL, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- U.S. Special Envoy for North Korea Glyn Davies met Thursday with South Korea's chief nuclear negotiator to discuss North Korean nuclear disarmament.
Davies, who succeeded Stephen Bosworth as special envoy, arrived in Seoul as both South Korea and the United States look at further dialogue with North Korea over the resumption of the stalled six-party talks, Yonhap news agency reported.
Davies held talks with Lim Sung-nam, South Korea's envoy to the six-party talks.
The six-party talks, which seek North Korea's denuclearization in return for massive aid, involve the two Koreas, China, Russia, Japan and the United States. The countries have not held talks for about three years after North Korea walked out.
South Korea and the United States have said the North must halt its uranium enrichment program and accept other conditions before the talks can resume. North Korea has been saying lately it is ready to restart the talks.
"At the very core of all that we do when it relates to (North Korea) is really our alliance -- the relationship between the United States and South Korea," Davies said prior to his meeting Lim, Yonhap reported. "So that's why I wanted to come here first and to spend the most time on my trip in Seoul."
Davies, who took over his new job in October, is accompanied by Clifford Hart, the U.S. representative to the six-party talks, and other officials. The team also plans to visit Japan and China, Yonhap said.
