Bangkok safe from fresh floodwaters

BANGKOK, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- More than 26 million cubic feet of floodwaters remain north of Bangkok but the Thai city will not see any fresh inundation, officials said Wednesday.

Anond Snidvongs, water management adviser to the Flood Relief Operations Command, said he would consult with the strategic committee on a national water resources management system on how to take care of the remaining floodwaters that have inundated Thailand, the Bangkok Post reported. About half of the water must be stored for farm use.

Snidvongs said the committee would put new water management facilities to the west and east of Bangkok once all floodwaters recede.

Meanwhile, he said he expects many citizens might build walls or elevate their lands to prevent future flooding once they dry out.

The strategic committee will set regulations to ensure these practices meet standards set by the country's Environment Act. The erection of walls and land elevation will be monitored through satellite photos.
