CAIRO, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- An Egyptian court has refused to release an activist blogger accused of participating in clashes between protesters and the military that killed 28 people.
Abd el-Fattah is charged with assaulting military personnel, stealing automatic weapons belonging to the armed forces and inciting violence against the military in the Oct. 9 clash between protesters -- mostly Coptic Christians -- and the military, al-Masry al-Youm reported Monday.
The defense team has submitted evidence it says proves he arrived at the scene of the violence after the clashes ended, contradicting witness testimony he was present.
Defense lawyers had requested their client's release, saying he is not at risk of fleeing, and noting he had returned from a visit to the United States.
