Iran says it shot down U.S. drone

TEHRAN, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- An Iranian military official said the army shot down a U.S drone after it entered the country's airspace from neighboring Afghanistan.

An unnamed senior military official was quoted by Press TV on Sunday saying the country's military electronic warfare unit recently shot down an American RQ-170 Sentinel stealth unmanned aircraft in the eastern part of the country. There was no mention when the drone was downed but the report said the aircraft suffered minimal damage when it was seized.

"Due to the clear border violation, the operational and electronic measures taken by the Islamic Republic of Iran's Armed Forces against the invading aircraft will not remain limited to Iran's borders," the senior military official was quoted saying.

In July Iran said it shot down a drone over the city of Qom near the Fordu nuclear site and in January 2010 said it shot down two "Western spy drones" in the gulf, the BBC said, noting no evidence was produced to support the report.
