Man gets 20 years for offending Thai monarchy

BANGKOK, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- A court in Thailand sentenced a 61-year-old man to 20 years in prison Wednesday for sending text messages that insulted the monarchy.

Ampon Tangnoppakul was found guilty on four counts of insulting the monarchy and violating Thailand's 2007 Computer Act, the Thai news agency MCOT reported.

Prosecutors said Ampon sent the offending text messages to a private secretary of former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Ampon denied the charges saying he didn't know how to send text messages and his phone had been in for repair at the time.

There was no information available on what the messages said.
