Parasailing death sparks investigation

ST. CROIX, Virgin Islands, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- The U.S. Coast Guard said it was investigating the death of a woman who fell into the water while parasailing in Caribbean.

The woman, Bernice Kraftcheck, 60, died Tuesday, the Virgin Islands Daily News reported Saturday.

Her daughter, Danielle Haese, 34, was also hurt in the accident, with injuries severe enough to result in overnight hospitalization, the newspaper said.

"All parasailing shore excursions in the Caribbean have been canceled indefinitely, pending the outcome of the investigation," Celebrity Cruises spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez said.

The Daily News said six federal and regional agencies were involved in the investigation.

The two women were traveling on the Celebrity Eclipse cruise ship on a seven-night cruise with stops at Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and St. Maarten.

The parasailing excursion was operated by Caribbean Watersports and Tours.

Parasailing involves a 600-foot towline attached to a boat that pulls passengers wearing parachutes.

The parasail passengers ride as high as 400-feet above the water.
