Canadian reservist guilty in soldier death

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- A former Canadian reservist has been found guilty at a Halifax, Nova Scotia, court-martial of killing a fellow soldier in Afghanistan, the military said.

In an appeal, Matthew Wilcox, 24, was found guilty of criminal negligence causing death and negligent performance of duty for failing to unload his pistol after leaving his guard post, Postmedia News reported.

The trial heard Wilcox and friend and fellow reservist Cpl. Kevin Megeney were in their tent March 6, 2007, playing a game of "quick-draw" when Megeney was fatally shot through the chest.

Wilcox was originally found guilty in 2009, but he appealed. His sentencing hearing began Thursday. He had originally been sentenced to four years in prison, the report said.

He has since been discharged from the Canadian Forces.
