Oops: Sweden deports man to wrong country

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Swedish police mistakenly deported an Iranian citizen to Iraq and now he faces 15 years in prison on false citizenship charges, the man's sister said.

The 53-year-old man, who was born in Iraq, was deported by Saddam Hussein in the 1980s and subsequently was granted citizenship by Iran, the Swedish news agency TT reported Wednesday.

The man later moved to Sweden where he sought residency but his application was rejected in 2010 and police in Gavle were instructed to deport him back to Iran.

Instead, the man was sent to Iraq were he is currently jailed for allegedly claiming false citizenship, the man's sister said.

"I traveled to Baghdad and got to visit my brother at the police station," she said. "He was in a dark cell without electricity along with several others."

The error has been reported to Sweden's Parliamentary Ombudsman, TT said.
