TAIPEI, Taiwan, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- The government of Taiwan is calling for the United States to release a diplomat charged with employing an illegal immigrant in Missouri.
FBI agents arrested 64-year-old Jacqueline Liu Friday in Kansas City and charged her with foreign labor fraud, Taiwan's Central News Agency said.
Federal prosecutors allege Liu made a Filipino woman work 16-18 hours a day as a housekeeper and paid her $450 a month, KCTV in Kansas City reported.
Liu is the director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office.
Taiwan's CNA agency said the arrest and detention contravene a 1980 agreement between the two countries that established diplomatic immunity against arrests and lawsuits.
Foreign Minister Timothy Yang told the agency a protest had been filed about the U.S. "manner and attitude" in Liu's arrest.
He said the issue would also be raised at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation ongoing in Hawaii.
