DAMIETTA, Egypt, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Hospitals in Egypt reported one death and a dozen injuries following a clash Sunday between police and protesters at a fertilizer plant.
The confrontation occurred during a sit-in by demonstrators opposing the planned expansion of the plant in the port city of Damietta, which opponents say will increase pollution from toxic waste in the area.
Hospital personnel told al-Masry al-Youm the family of the slain protester, identified as Islam Amin Abdullah, refused to bury the body until an autopsy was conducted.
The six-day demonstration has snarled operations in the port. Al-Masry al-Youm said about 20 ships in the harbor were unable to unload and another 22 cargo vessels were waiting outside the harbor for the situation to be resolved.
