Afghan mother, daughter stoned, shot

GHAZNI, Afghanistan, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- A mother and her daughter were stoned and then shot to death in Afghanistan by men who accused them of adultery, officials said.

The mother, a widow, and her daughter were killed Thursday in the Khawaja Hakim area of Ghazni City in Ghazni Province, the BBC reported, quoting security officials.

The ages of the two victims were not reported.

Police were holding two men as suspects.

Officials blamed the Taliban, who had accused the victims of "moral deviation and adultery."

The killers reportedly entered the home where the two lived, and took them out to a yard where they were stoned and shot.

"Neighbors did not help or inform the authorities on time," one official told the BBC.

The report said religious leaders in the city have been issuing fatwas to report on those "involved in adultery."

Ghazni City is one of the places where security is to be transferred to Afghan personnel by NATO as part of its plan to withdraw forces from the country by 2014.

The scene of the killings is not far from the provincial governor's office and the police chief's office, the BBC reported.
