MOSCOW, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Saturday he believes the revival of Orthodoxy in Russia over the past 20 years is a "miracle."

"If we talk about what has happened over these 20 years in terms of my experiences as an Orthodox Christian, it is a miracle. Frankly, I could not imagine 15-20 years ago that the recovery, finding of faith for the vast number of our fellow citizens will go at such a pace," Medvedev said.

Medvedev also noted the church now cooperates with government and public institutions, RIA Novosti reported.

"I am very pleased that the state and church initiatives could take place lately," he said, adding that he believes in the importance of Orthodoxy in the education of young people and the preservation of Russian cultural and spiritual values.

Medvedev also plans to direct the Ministry of Defense to actively develop its clergy. There will be 240 clergy and nine priest positions available in the Russian army in the future.

"I will give the appropriate instructions to the Ministry of Defense," Medvedev said.
