BORGHETTO VARA, Italy, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Rescue workers in Italy found one person dead Tuesday a week after violent storms, flooding and mudslides hit the region, bringing the death toll to 10.
The body was found under a pile of debris in the small Ligurian town of Borghetto Vara, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.
Rescuers were searching for at least four people still missing in the coastal area near the Tuscan-Ligurian border. The area was hit hard last week by flooding caused by heavy rain.
Franco Gabielli, head of the Civil Protection Department, said emergency response measures were in place to handle more downpours forecast for later in the week.
A memorial service was held Tuesday for Sandro Usai, a volunteer emergency worker killed by heavy flooding in Monterosso. Italian President Giorgio Napolitano awarded Usai the Gold Medal for Civic Valour, one of the country's highest recognitions, ANSA reported.
