Man sentenced in Russia soccer fan's death

MOSCOW, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- A Russian court Friday sentenced a man to 20 years in jail for the fatal shooting of a soccer fan that led to ethnic clashes.

Aslan Cherkesov, of the Kabardino-Balkaria republic in the North Caucasus region, had been convicted last week of the December shooting death of Spartak Moscow fan Yegor Sviridov in the capital, state-run media RIA Novosti reported.

The shooting, with a rubber-bullet pistol, occurred during a brawl between Spartak fans and internal migrants from Russia's North Caucasus region.

Also Friday, Moscow's Tverskoi District Court found five men guilty of participating in ethnic clashes in Moscow over the shooting death.

The men, including three activists from the opposition Other Russia movement, had called for mass disturbances and caused what RIA Novosti said was "bodily harm" to police during a Dec. 11, 2010, rally.

The rally became violent after 5,000 fans "went on a rampage and called for the death of Russia's migrant population," RIA Novosti said.
