Man lost in Canadian wilderness rescued

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- A man lost in the Canadian wilderness for 10 days was rescued Sunday, authorities said.

Michael St. Laurent, 45, of British Columbia, was found by an off-duty search-and-rescue worker Saturday afternoon on Grouse Mountain in the Hanes Valley but rescuers were forced to wait until daylight Sunday to get him out by helicopter, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

St. Laurent told the CBC he had gone out for a day trek and survived with a little food and rain water, and a tarp. He experienced hallucinations and frostbite during his 10 days lost in the mountains. He found himself in that predicament after accidentally veering off a trail and injuring a hip and knee.

"I got stuck up in the bush. I saw the rescuers looking for me," he said. "I could hear them; they couldn't hear me."

Tim Jones with North Shore Search and Rescue said St. Laurent considered himself a day away from death.

"He actually wrote on his forearm all his vital information because he felt his body would be found and he wanted somebody to know who he was," Jones said.
