EU: Only small changes to treaty

BRUSSELS, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek has suggested only small tweaks in economic governance Sunday at the European Union summit in Brussels.

He suggested making just small alterations to the EU treaty out of concern that certain countries might be wary of putting changes to a referendum," the EUobserver reported Sunday.

"We must be rather gentle about (this) and delicate but I think we should start to open the discussion in our constituencies and to say that we can imagine that the treaty changes are not too big, are limited to one area of economic government, which could help to create a more stabilized European economy."

Germany is among those calling for changes to the treaty, saying fiscally misbehaving states should be punished by the European Court of Justice.

Meanwhile, a new British law has been drafted saying any changes to the treaty in the future would have to be put to a referendum. British conservatives have regularly complained about EU over-regulation in social affairs and employment, the EUobserver reported.
