Bangkok braces for wall of water

BANGKOK, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- More than 113,000 residents of Bangkok were in shelters Sunday as floodwaters from northern Thailand flowed into the capital, the Bangkok Post said.

The newspaper said government officials were "sounding less and less confident" about the city's safety as rivers and canals were beyond peak capacity after three months of heavy rains drenched Southern Asia.

The seasonal deluge that also triggered landslides has killed at least 356 people in Thailand so far, China's state news agency Xinhua said.

Bangkok officials said 1,743 evacuation centers had been opened during the weekend that could accommodate as many as 800,000 people, the newspaper said.

The urgency of the flooding was escalated Sunday when Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra spoke on national media and urged Bangkok residents to "move their possessions and cars to higher ground," the Post said.

The premier also warned flood conditions were likely to persist for as long as three weeks.
