Italian official wants migrants deported

ROME, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- An Italian official said he wants undocumented Libyan migrants living in Italy to be deported.

Umberto Bossi, the leader of Italy's regionalist Northern League party, said illegal immigrants from Libya should be sent home after former dictator Moammar Gaddafi was killed Thursday, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

"Now [Italy] can send the illegal Libyan immigrants back home," Bossi said.

More than 50,000 migrants have arrived in Italy from Libya and Tunisia since January.

Italy has already begun to encourage voluntary repatriation and wants to restore migration agreements with Libya.

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano said Gaddafi's death is a positive step forward for Libya and its new government.

"It turns a dramatic leaf in Libya," he said. "Now we hope a new country can be built, one that is free and united."
