Arms stolen in armory attack in Nigeria

KWAME, Nigeria, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Nigerian authorities appealed Monday for public assistance in finding the perpetrators of an attack on a police armory in which arms and ammunition were stolen.

A police officer was killed in the attack early Sunday at the headquarters of a police unit in Kwame, Gombe state. The attackers bombed part of the armory and burned down the administrative officers, Nigeria's The Guardian reported Monday.

Fourteen police vehicles were burned out during the attack, the newspaper said.

In an incident in Jos North, an attacker hacked a soldier to death with a machete and in Maiduguri two suspected members of Boko Haram -- an Islamic group that advocates imposition of Shariah law -- killed a local official, police said.

Assistant Inspector-General of Police John Moronike said police shot and killed three attackers during the raid in Kwame.

He asked the public for help in locating the attackers and said there would be a thorough investigation and a public report on the attack.
